The greengrocers' café

The greengrocers' café

Aux Trois Maries is one of the oldest bouchons in Lyon, born in the middle of the last century, when Eluard and Aragon would meet on the place de la Baleine for lunch. It was once known as “le café des primeurs”, after the market on the banks of the Saône.

Tante Paulette

Tante Paulette

After the war the restaurant was taken over by the celebrated Tante Paulette, then in turn by the Bolomier, Monnet and Fournier families, who earned it its reputation.

III

Today

Today

Continuing and respecting the work of our predecessors, we serve local cuisine made from a careful selection of fine regional produce and specialities, in a “Lyonnais bistro” spirit — more contemporary, but every bit as welcoming.

Owner

Clémentine Roure in front of the restaurant

After cutting my teeth in luxury hospitality, I set up on the place de la Baleine in the heart of Vieux-Lyon, first taking over the Maître Bœuf restaurant in 2009, then succeeding the Monnet and Fournier families at the helm of Aux Trois Maries in May 2012. Our guiding principle: working closely with local producers to serve traditional, flavourful cuisine in refined surroundings, with attentive, professional staff.

V

The origin of the name

The Three Marys

The restaurant takes its name from the rue des Trois Maries, named in the 17th century after the three Marys of the Gospel.

I

Marie-Salomé

Mother of the apostles James and John. She is among those who go to the tomb on Easter morning.

II

Marie-Jacobée

Mother of James the Less. She follows the procession to the foot of the cross.

III

Marie-Madeleine

The first to whom Christ appears, and the first to carry the news.

Three silhouettes that the restaurant's logo still carries today.
